Spotify for iPhone and iPad updated with new interface

Spotify, the popular music streaming service, has updated its iPhone and iPad with a brand new interface. Now you can navigate around the app with a new sidebar, always see what you're listening to from the Now Playing bar along the bottom of every screen, and a new Track menu.

This update to Spotify also fixed a few issues including the "track only available online" bug, the lock screen no longer displays the incorrect track, and shuffle now turns off after you've used "Shuffle Play" on an album or playlist.

A basic ad-supported account with Spotify is completely free and an ad-free subscription is $4.99/month. A premium account with Spotify allows you to download and listen to music offline and will run you $9.99/month.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Singer Scott Weiland said he learned that he'd been fired by the Stone Temple Pilots when the band released a one-sentence statement to the media Wednesday.

"I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press," he wrote in a statement. "Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out."

The statement by the band said: "Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland." No other information was provided.

Weiland said he's focusing on his solo tour, which kicks off Friday in Flint, Mich.

Stone Temple Pilots' 1992 debut, "Core," has sold more than 8 million units in the United States. Their hits include "Vasoline," ''Interstate Love Song" and "Plush," which won a Grammy in 1993 for best hard rock performance with vocal.

Weiland was also in the supergroup Velvet Revolver with Slash and other musicians. The 45-year-old has dealt with drug addiction, run-ins with the law and two failed marriages. He released his memoir, "Not Dead & Not for Sale," in 2011.

The Stone Temple Pilots' latest album is their self-titled 2010 release.

At more colleges, classes on genetics get personal

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Bakir Hajdarevic didn't have to study for the most important test in a class last fall. He just had to spit ? a lot.

The 19-year-old freshman at the University of Iowa took an honors seminar on personal genetics in which students had the option of sending saliva samples so a testing company could use DNA to unlock some of their most personal health and family secrets. The results would tell them how likely they were to get some forms of cancer, whether they were carriers for genetic diseases, where their ancestors came from, and a trove of other information.

The class, taught at Iowa for the first time, is part of a growing movement in higher education to tackle the rapidly advancing field of personal genetics, which is revolutionizing medicine and raising difficult ethical and privacy questions. The classes are forcing students to decide whether it is better to be ignorant or informed about possible health problems ? a decision more Americans will confront as the price of genetic testing plummets and it becomes more popular.

Hajdarevic said he was eager to "find out about all the little mysteries" lurking in his DNA. Sure he was nervous that he might get bad news about cancer risks. But he said the curiosity to learn about himself ? and whether he needed to take steps to improve his health ? outweighed those concerns.

And so, one day last fall, he found himself in his dorm room struggling to spit into a test tube that he would mail to 23andMe, the Mountain View, Calif., testing company.

"It was like 10 minutes of spitting, literally," he recalled, laughing. "I ran out of spit really quickly. I was spitting for like 15 seconds and then I'd run out of juice."

Such episodes have become more common as similar classes have popped up on college campuses over the past three years with backing from 23andMe, which tests for about one million genetic variants possibly linked to tens of thousands of conditions and traits. The company announced in December it had raised $50 million from investors, and was cutting its price for its personal genotype testing from $299 to $99.

23andMe has offered universities discounts on the testing for the classes, along with course materials, and has partnered with dozens of universities and high schools. Stanford University, University of Illinois, the University of Texas and Duke University are some of the schools featuring courses on personal genetics this year, according to its website.

Some of the classes are geared toward medical, nursing and pharmacy students whose careers could be shaped by genetics, while others are for undergraduates hoping to learn more about a field often noted in popular culture. Most of the courses are electives, and students can opt out of the testing if they're uncomfortable. For students whose DNA is tested, the knowledge they glean is intensely personal and wide-ranging, from whether they are a carrier for cystic fibrosis to whether they are likely to be good sprinters.

This is a generation that grew up sharing details of their lives on Facebook, and these students said they were eager to know more about themselves.

"I thought the coolest thing about the whole class was that you would be able to test your own genetics to find out things about yourself. That's what drew me in," said University of Iowa freshman Morgan Weis, who plans a career in nursing. When her results came back, "I told my friends, 'Come look at this, it's so cool'. I was pretty excited about it."

This semester, Stanford professor Stuart Kim is teaching a class for medical students and graduate students in genetics and computer science for a fourth time. He says his students will never forget the class when they learn whether they are sensitive to the blood-thinner Warfarin; that knowledge could be critical if they ever suffer a stroke, because too large or small a dose could kill them. But he dreads the day when testing informs a student: That man who raised you? He's not your biological father.

"That will happen one of these days," he said.

He said 90 percent of the students have opted to test their own DNA rather than a random person's, and a class survey found that students who did so retained more information.

University of Iowa professor Jeff Murray has been teaching human genetics for 25 years, and developed last fall's class after reading about similar ones elsewhere. He talked through the pros and cons of testing with students, and spent two class periods examining 23andMe's consent form. Murray encouraged students to consult with their parents, through their consent was not required ? students were all 18 or older. Only a few opted out of the testing after they or their parents raised concerns.

"Some people just didn't want to know if they are going to get breast cancer or Alzheimer's," said one of Murray's students, Alexis Boothe, 18. "Personally, I wanted to know."

She said she was not surprised when she learned she's seven times more likely than the average person to develop Crohn's disease, a bowel disorder, since it runs in her family. But now she said she can make sure not to smoke and watch her stress, two triggers. Boothe said she was amused when she learned that she shares northern European ancestors with the singer Jimmy Buffett, and when a third cousin she doesn't know sent her a message through the company.

For Hajdarevic, one surprising result was that he may be lactose intolerant. Although he's eaten dairy without issue his whole life, he can now monitor for symptoms that could develop later. He also learned he's a carrier for the mild form of a rare genetic disease, Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency.

But overall, he says, he was relieved.

"I was kind of scared going in, like, 'Oh my God, I might have a high risk factor for some kind of cancer'," he said. "But knock on wood, according to the test, I don't really have much to worry about."

Scientists develop a whole new way of harvesting energy from the sun

A new method of harvesting the Sun's energy is emerging, thanks to scientists at UC Santa Barbara's Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Materials. Though still in its infancy, the research promises to convert sunlight into energy using a process based on metals that are more robust than many of the semiconductors used in conventional methods. The researchers' findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

"It is the first radically new and potentially workable alternative to semiconductor-based solar conversion devices to be developed in the past 70 years or so," said Martin Moskovits, professor of chemistry at UCSB.

In conventional photoprocesses, a technology developed and used over the last century, sunlight hits the surface of semiconductor material, one side of which is electron-rich, while the other side is not. The photon, or light particle, excites the electrons, causing them to leave their postions, and create positively-charged "holes." The result is a current of charged particles that can be captured and delivered for various uses, including powering lightbulbs, charging batteries, or facilitating chemical reactions.

"For example, the electrons might cause hydrogen ions in water to be converted into hydrogen, a fuel, while the holes produce oxygen," said Moskovits.

In the technology developed by Moskovits and his team, it is not semiconductor materials that provide the electrons and venue for the conversion of solar energy, but nanostructured metals ? a "forest" of gold nanorods, to be specific.

For this experiment, gold nanorods were capped with a layer of crystalline titanium dioxide decorated with platinum nanoparticles, and set in water. A cobalt-based oxidation catalyst was deposited on the lower portion of the array.

"When nanostructures, such as nanorods, of certain metals are exposed to visible light, the conduction electrons of the metal can be caused to oscillate collectively, absorbing a great deal of the light," said Moskovits. "This excitation is called a surface plasmon."

As the "hot" electrons in these plasmonic waves are excited by light particles, some travel up the nanorod, through a filter layer of crystalline titanium dioxide, and are captured by platinum particles. This causes the reaction that splits hydrogen ions from the bond that forms water. Meanwhile, the holes left behind by the excited electrons head toward the cobalt-based catalyst on the lower part of the rod to form oxygen.

According to the study, hydrogen production was clearly observable after about two hours. Additionally, the nanorods were not subject to the photocorrosion that often causes traditional semiconductor material to fail in minutes.

"The device operated with no hint of failure for many weeks," Moskovits said.

The plasmonic method of splitting water is currently less efficient and more costly than conventional photoprocesses, but if the last century of photovoltaic technology has shown anything, it is that continued research will improve on the cost and efficiency of this new method ? and likely in far less time than it took for the semiconductor-based technology, said Moskovits.

"Despite the recentness of the discovery, we have already attained 'respectable' efficiencies. More importantly, we can imagine achievable strategies for improving the efficiencies radically," he said.

Research in this study was also performed by postdoctoral researchers Syed Mubeen and Joun Lee; grad student Nirala Singh; materials engineer Stephan Kraemer; and chemistry professor Galen Stucky.

Payday Predators Move to the Internet | The Economic Populist

Payday loans have to be the poster child for exploiting the poor. ?People should never get a payday loan. ?Selling blood or begging in the streets is a better option. ?The Pew Chartable Trust has been on the warpath to expose these exploitive sorts of financial ripoffs which it turns out are quite the profitable business.

Twelve million Americans take out payday loans each year, spending approximately $7.4 billion annually at 20,000 storefronts and hundreds of websites, plus additional sums at a growing number of banks. Though they are marketed as short-term products for temporary needs, payday loans are typically used for ordinary expenses not unexpected emergencies. The average customer ends up indebted for five months and pays $520 in finance charges.

Some of these loans are charging interest rates of 500% and Pew reports the average person taking out a payday loan coughs up $520 in interest and finance charges for just $375 in principle. ?Who needs the mob and loans sharks when we have payday loans?

The New York Times reports major banks are enabling these predatory lenders evade new state laws which cap interest rates or ban payday loans altogether.

With 15 states banning payday loans, a growing number of the lenders have set up online operations in more hospitable states or far-flung locales like Belize, Malta and the West Indies to more easily evade statewide caps on interest rates.

While the banks, which include giants like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, do not make the loans, they are a critical link for the lenders, enabling the lenders to withdraw payments automatically from borrowers? bank accounts, even in states where the loans are banned entirely. In some cases, the banks allow lenders to tap checking accounts even after the customers have begged them to stop the withdrawals.

While the banks deny any wrongdoing, Pew Charitable Trust says a full 27% of the people who get payday loans are having their checking and savings accounts go into overdraft due to banks allowing payday loan creditors to make automatic withdrawals. ? Even though Federal Law is supposed to allow a bank account holder to stop authorized bank account withdrawals, many banks are ignoring their customers and letting payday lenders plunder these accounts anyway. ?Those withdrawals are sending bank customer's accounts into overdraft with all of those corresponding penalties and fees. ?Turns out that's quite a profitable business for the banks.

Only 14% of those who take out payday loans can actually afford the payments so what happens is their accounts go into overdraft, charging more fees and they end up being buried in much worse debt than ever before. ? According to Pew Charitable Trust, 51% turn to further desperate measures to pay off the original payday loan. ?Below is the graph on the absurdity on trying to pay back payday loans when one is living paycheck to paycheck as it is.

Many of these borrowers ultimately turn to the same options they could have used instead of payday loans to finally pay off the loans, including getting help from friends or family, selling or pawning personal possessions, or taking out another type of loan. One in six has used a tax refund to eliminate payday loan debt.

The New York Times claims both the FDIC and the newly formed Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are investigating the major banks, in particular Wells Fargo who moved into payday loans around 2010. ? They are in particular focusing in on Internet payday loans, which skirt around state laws which either ban these loans outright or cap the interest rates payday lenders can charge.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are examining banks? roles in the online loans, according to several people with direct knowledge of the matter. Benjamin M. Lawsky, who heads New York State?s Department of Financial Services, is investigating how banks enable the online lenders to skirt New York law and make loans to residents of the state, where interest rates are capped at 25 percent.

Congress has yet to really act, although Senator Merkley has introduced legislation to try to stop banks from skirting around the laws. ? Introducing a bill means nothing these days where most legislation which gets passed is simply corporate lobbyists yearly wish lists.

The SAFE Lending Act would crack down on the worst practices of the online payday lending industry and give states more power to enforce already-existing rules to protect consumers from predatory loans.

There is simply something wrong with a society that preys on the vulnerable, and demands their pound of flesh at a time when that person is already on the edge of the abyss. ?Yet over and over again, this mentality of picking off the weak like a pack of wolves hunting the wounded gazelle is endorsed as good business and a place for profits, applauded by Wall street.

Here's a question we've been asking ourselves for a while: what if the dock for a hybrid tablet could offer not only a keyboard and battery, but also increased performance? Wouldn't that provide the best of both worlds, with long battery life when you're tablet mode and true laptop productivity when you have a place to sit down?

Turns out AMD is on the same wavelength. In fact, the company has already implemented the idea in a prototype device here at MWC, destined to appear in commercial products around the middle of this year. As you'll see if you check out the video after the break, it's built by Compal and includes a 13-inch 1080p tablet with a quad-core Temash chip, and when combined with its Turbo Dock it delivers some serious power -- going from 8 W to 15 W, with extra air flow delivered through the connector to keep it cool.

AMD says that the docket tablet offers general computing performance broadly at the level of a full-fledged 17 W Intel Core i3 notebook. Judging from Microsoft's Fish Bowl HTML5 benchmark, we're looking at a gain of 50 percent -- and yes, that's pretty impressive. Next stop, a dock with an extra discrete GPU for CrossFire gaming? Who knows, but it's the logical progression.

Samsung HomeSync Android TV box packs 1TB HDD, dual-core CPU

A mobile-focused show like MWC 2013 seems like an odd place to show off a TV-connected box, but that's how Samsung has chosen to introduce its new HomeSync device. Powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core CPU and running Android Jelly Bean, it's a media hub that the press release claims will let you view all your videos, photos and apps at full 1080p resolution, with streaming from local Galaxy devices. Additional specs include 1GB of RAM, 8GB Flash memory, a 1TB HDD, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11n 2.4 & 5GHz, Gigabit Ethernet, plus optical audio and HDMI 1.4 outputs. It even supports up to eight individual password-protected and encrypted user accounts, with each able to individually sync content from other devices and share it with the other accounts. There's no mention of Google TV, but it has access to the Play store to get apps on its own, while also allowing remote control from a phone. Also unspecified is pricing or any support for specific streaming protocols like Miracast or WiDi, although it's supposed to launch in "select countries" starting in April.

Georgetown Tops Syracuse 57-46: Otto Porter Leads No. 11 Hoyas Past No. 8 Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Georgetown coach John Thompson III wouldn't bite. He wasn't about to say: "This Carrier Dome rivalry is officially over."

He sure could have.

Thirty-three years after his father became persona non grata in Syracuse, Thompson and star Otto Porter added their names to the lore of the Georgetown-Syracuse rivalry.

Porter scored a career-high 33 points as the 11th-ranked Hoyas humbled No. 8 Syracuse 57-46 on Saturday.

It was the final game between Georgetown (21-4, 11-3 Big East) and Syracuse (22-5, 10-4) in the Carrier Dome as members of the same conference ? the Orange are leaving the Big East in July to join the Atlantic Coast Conference.

"I'm sure you're waiting for a Manley Field House statement," Thompson said with a smile. "You're not going to get it. We don't get frazzled too much. It's good to win here. We were the last team to win here, but there's still a lot of ball to play. It's one win."

The victory placed an emphatic stamp on the impending end of an era before an imposing Orange crowd. It snapped the Orange's 38-game home winning streak, the longest in the nation, and came 33 years after John Thompson Jr.'s Hoyas halted the Orange's 57-game home winning streak at Manley. Both streaks were school records in the respective buildings.

Porter's incredible play ? open more often than not against Syracuse's 2-3 zone, he was 12 of 19, including five 3-pointers, and had a game-high five steals ? came in front of a disappointed record crowd of 35,012, the largest ever to see a college basketball on a school campus. It was the fewest points scored at home by Syracuse in the Carrier Dome, which opened in 1980.

"Porter was so good today," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "He just dominated the game. He really won the game. He had to make plays and made them all day. Offensively, the games that we have lost we have struggled shooting the basketball, and today was no exception. I thought the game got away from us early."

Georgetown has held opponents under 60 points 17 times, allowing 56.1 points per game, with 11 of last 12 opponents shooting below 40 percent. Syracuse joined the list, shooting 17 of 50 (34 percent) and going 5 of 20 on 3-pointers.

"He (Porter) obviously had a great game, a great shooting game," said Syracuse senior guard Brandon Triche, who struggled in a 4-of-13 shooting performance, making just 1 of 7 from behind the arc. "We didn't take anything away. We didn't take his drive away. We didn't take his 3-point shot, midrange shot. Once he gets going, he's obviously going to be very hard to stop, especially playing zone."

Fittingly, Syracuse began its latest home win streak after a loss to Georgetown just over two years ago. That was Thompson III's first win in the Carrier Dome and a huge relief at the time. Like Boeheim, he heaped lavish praise on his star.

"It was special. That's the only way to categorize it," Thompson said of Porter's performance. "You saw the show that I saw. To play up here against that opponent, that's what players do, and he's a special player."

This one surely wasn't easy for the young Hoyas. The stands surrounding Jim Boeheim Court were jammed with 35,012 fans, who transformed the building into a raging sea of orange. Former star Carmelo Anthony's jersey was retired in a halftime ceremony with the Orange in the locker room holding a 23-21 lead after a late surge in the closing seconds of the opening half.

The game was there for the taking, it seemed.

Porter, who injured his right knee in a win over DePaul on Wednesday night, had other ideas. He was unstoppable after a slow start and was the only Georgetown player in double figures, putting the game away late.

After C.J. Fair stole an inbounds pass and fed Michael Carter-Williams for a slam dunk to move Syracuse within 41-37 with 6:48 to play, Porter hit a fallaway 3-pointer as he was fouled by Triche and hit the free throw for a four-point play.

"I don't know how that went in. I was speechless," Porter said. "We just stayed poised. We just went out there and played."

Just how intense the rivalry has been is reflected by Boeheim's record against the Hoyas. The second-winningest coach in Division I history, Boeheim is just 37-35 despite an overall record of 912-309, a 74.8 winning percentage.

Georgetown has won nine straight, the longest current winning streak in the league, and the Hoyas will host Syracuse in two weeks.

Fair had 13 points and seven rebounds and James Southerland scored 13 points to pace Syracuse, while Carter-Williams had seven points and five assists.

Syracuse rallied in the final minute of the first half to take a two-point lead, but the Hoyas erased the deficit quickly with a 10-2 spurt early in the second half keyed by Porter. He hit a 3 from the right wing, another from the left side, then stole a pass by Carter-Williams and hit a pullup jumper in the lane. D'Vaun Smith-Rivera's 3 from the left corner slammed both sides of the rim and dropped in for a 39-31 lead with 11:16 to play.

Southerland swished a 3 from the top of the key off a feed from Carter-Williams to stop the skid and Georgetown was called for a shot-clock violation when its slow-paced attack backfired, but the Orange could not muster another rally.

Syracuse used its home-crowd advantage ? the Dome was rocking like the days of yesteryear ? to run off a 10-2 spurt early. Triche and Southerland hit 3-pointers on consecutive trips down court as the Hoyas sputtered, missing often in close and from afar. The Hoyas made just one basket, a foul-line jumper by Porter after a block by Fair ? in the first 9 minutes while missing their first eight attempts from long range.

"Offensively, we did have them on the ropes in the first half," Triche said. "But we ended up shooting a bunch of jump shots (and missing), and they got right back in the game."

The play was spirited, as it usually is when these teams meet. But after a flurry of misses under the Georgetown basket, the Hoyas maintained possession and Porter began to display the form that has made him a favorite to win Big East player of the year honors.

The 6-foot-8 sophomore swished a 3 from the wing to start a 17-3 spurt in which he scored 14 points. He then converted a slam off a turnover by Rakeem Christmas to give the Hoyas their first lead, and hit another 3 and a baseline jumper to complete the rush and put Georgetown up 21-15 as a hush fell over the Dome.

Carter-Williams stopped the slide with a three-point play for the Orange. Fair followed with a baseline floater and Southerland drained a 3 at the shot-clock buzzer in the final seconds off a feed from Triche.

The Georgetown-Syracuse rivalry was unmatched in its heyday in the 1980s and early 1990s and helped transform the Big East into the behemoth it's been for so long. Future games between the teams ? both schools have indicated they want to keep playing ? will have a different feel after this season.

What a rivalry it's been.

The teams have played 88 times since 1930 and 20 of those games were decided by one or two points, and 12 were settled in overtime.

No wonder that students camped all week outside the Dome to be part of the crowd. Not only did they get to witness history, Boeheim and assistants Mike Hopkins and Adrian Autry stopped by on Friday with coffee and refreshments in appreciation of their support.

In that memorable game 33 years ago, the Hoyas beat Syracuse 52-50 in the last regularly scheduled game at Manley when Eric "Sleepy" Floyd made free throws with 5 seconds to play. Afterward, Thompson Jr. declared ? "Manley Field House is now officially closed" ? and a rivalry was born.

This was the 72nd crowd of greater than 30,000 for a Syracuse men's game, and the Hoyas were the opponent 17 times.

Not a bad way to go out.

I was happily surprised to see Hunter Walk interview Jason Kincaid, one of the first TechCrunch employees. The interview is here and I’m reprinting it below. Kids have it all these days -- tailor-made gadgets, their own little corners in mobile platforms, and of course, loads and loads of content. The latest to hit the wires is the Nick app for the iPad, offering a slew of Nickelodeon programming wrapped in a swipe-driven, tyke-friendly interface. Winter storm slams Midwest, threatens Northeast

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - A major winter storm moved into the U.S. Midwest on Thursday, blanketing states from Minnesota to Ohio with a mix of blinding snow, sleet and freezing rain.

The same storm dumped more than a foot of snow in Kansas, stranded motorists on highways and forced airports to cancel hundreds of flights.

The storm is expected to eventually reach the East Coast this weekend, delivering heavy snow to parts of New England for a third straight weekend, from northern Connecticut to southern Maine.

Kansas bore the brunt of the storm, with up to 15 inches of snow in some parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service. A 200-mile (323-km) stretch of Interstate 70 in central Kansas was closed and strewn with cars stuck in snow.

National Guard troops riding in Humvees were dispatched to look for stranded motorists along the interstate and other highways, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for Kansas emergency management services.

The fierce storm triggered severe thunderstorms from eastern Texas to Georgia.

Thunder accompanied snow in Kansas City, hit by 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour on Thursday morning.

"When there is thunder and lightning, it's a pretty screaming clue that you are going to have massive snowfall," said Andy Bailey, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback declared states of emergency because of hazardous travel and possible power outages. Brownback ordered state offices closed because of the storm.

STORM BRINGS SOME DROUGHT RELIEF

Kansas City International Airport was closed on Thursday while crews cleared runways. It was unclear when the airport would reopen, spokesman Joe McBride said.

At the Denver International Airport, some 55 commuter flights were canceled overnight, spokeswoman Laura Coale said. More than 320 flights in and out of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport were scrapped and nearly 50 flights in and out of Omaha's Eppley Airfield were listed as canceled by midday.

In Nebraska, a 19-year-old woman was killed in a two-car accident on Wednesday on Interstate 80 near Giltner. The Nebraska State Patrol said weather was a factor.

An 18-year-old man died in Oklahoma when his vehicle slid into a semi-truck on a slushy state highway, the state's highway patrol said.

Drought-stricken farmers in the Great Plains, one of the world's largest wheat-growing areas, welcomed the moisture brought by the storm, although experts said more rain or snow would be needed to ensure healthy crops.

"It's a travel nightmare, but all I hear are good things from farmers about how much this moisture is needed," said meteorologist Jeff Johnson of the National Weather Service in Dodge City, Kansas.

Rivera throws BP for first time since knee injury

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Yankees closer Mariano Rivera did more than throw on Friday. He also called balls and strikes.

The 43-year old Rivera threw 25 pitches in his first batting practice session since knee surgery last year and said he was happy with the results.

"It feels great to be on the mound," said Rivera, who expects to throw BP one or two more times. "Basically, just wanted to see hitters. I'm excited. Build up, and we'll go from there."

The first batter Rivera faced was minor leaguer Rob Segedin. After the first pitch, which the right-handed batter took, Rivera said: "Strike 1." When the next pitch was taken, Rivera said: "Strike 2, you better swing."

Segedin took the advice on the third offering, and lined what would have been a single to right center.

"There you go," Rivera said.

Rivera was limited to nine games last year, his season ending when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while tracking down a fly ball during batting practice in Kansas City on May 3. He had surgery to repair the injury on June 12.

"He looked great," manager Joe Girardi said. "Looked like what you'd expect him to look like, which is a good thing."

Rivera is a 12-time All-Star with 608 saves in the regular season and 42 more in the postseason. After additional BP sessions, he might throw a simulated game before starting exhibition play ahead of the Yankees' April 1 opener against Boston.

Ace CC Sabathia, likely to start that opener, threw 40 pitches during his third bullpen session and intends to throw batting practice on Monday.

"Felt good. No problems," Sabathia said.

The left-hander had arthroscopic surgery Oct. 25 to remove a bone spur from his left elbow.

Shortstop Derek Jeter, coming back after ankle surgery, continues to increase his workouts. He is hitting and fielding, and participating in an indoor running program.

"Every day is more and more," Jeter said. "More agility, more running."

Andy Pettitte, who turns 41 in June, threw 24 pitches in his initial batting practice session.

Right-hander Phil Hughes, receiving treatment for bulging disk in his upper back, said he feels significantly better and could start pool work Sunday. He might resume playing catch next week.

?Nashville Elvis? will be in the building at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks, Friday, March 1, to celebrate colon cancer awareness.

?We have invited the entertainer known as Nashville Elvis to our Dress in Blue Day celebration because one of Elvis? best-loved songs is ?Blue Suede Shoes,? and blue is the color associated with colon cancer,? said Sheila Bates, MSSW, community outreach manager for Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center?s Office of Patient and Community Education.

?We?re encouraging everyone to wear something blue as a reminder that early screening may help detect or even prevent the disease.?

Bates said anyone old enough to remember Elvis is the right age to start thinking about colon cancer screening.

The Colon Cancer Alliance initiated Dress in Blue Day in 2009 to raise awareness about colorectal cancer which is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Approximately 150,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year and more than 51,000 die from the disease.

During the Dress in Blue Day event on March 1, Nashville Elvis will be in the Courtyard Caf? at lunchtime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and in the lobby at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks from 2-4 p.m. Visitors to the cafeteria and One Hundred Oaks may have their pictures taken with Nashville Elvis, and with two VUMC employees who are dressed as giant colon polyps.

Polyps are small growths on the lining of the intestinal tract that may turn into cancer.
There will also be games and prizes for visitors who stop by the colorectal cancer education tables.

Everyone is advised to start screening beginning at age 50, and individuals who have a family history of the disease or persistent symptoms may need to start screening even earlier.

Screening with a test like a colonoscopy is the best way to prevent colorectal cancer. During the test a physician uses a long, flexible tube with a camera on the end to search for polyps inside the colon and can remove the polyps to prevent cancer from developing.

Obesity, cigarette smoking, a poor diet and lack of exercise all contribute to colon cancer risk.

The Vanderbilt Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Registry provides genetic counseling and testing for those who may have a hereditary risk. A sturdy new fence, surveillance sensors, and troop deployments along the Israeli side of the 65-mile border reflect concern in the Jewish state about the spillover from Syria?s civil war and what comes after the expected downfall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Errant fire from Syria has already crossed into Israeli territory several times, prompting Israel to fire back once.

"Things can change dramatically in hours," says?Kobi Marom, a resident of the Golan Heights ski village, Neve Ativ, and reserve Army colonel, as he surveys the valley. "We are trying to be prepared for a new situation in the region."

After two years of watching the Syrian conflict from the sidelines, the hostilities seem to have arrived at Israel?s doorstep. Syrian rebels are fighting to wrest control of the border from the Syrian Army, and there?s an increasing fear that militant groups on both sides of the civil war will get their hands on the country's advanced weapons arsenal and set their sites on Israel next. That presents a quandry for Israeli officials: Can they protect the country without getting sucked in to Syria's violence?

Treading a very thin line

Analysts say that balancing between the two will be increasingly difficult if the central authority continues to crumble in Syria and multiple power centers emerge in the countrywide war.

But some Israeli officials and security analysts see an upside to the chaos. The fall of Mr. Assad could be a strategic boost for Israel because it would sever the "Shiite crescent" that stretches from Iran to Lebanon, connecting Hezbollah to its supporters in Tehran. And former chief of IDF intelligence Amos Yadlin recently said that Israel has become more secure because the Syrian Army no longer poses a conventional threat to Israel.

"The main question is the day after," says Bernadetta Berti, a fellow at Tel Aviv University?s Institute for National Security Studies. "From the Israeli perspective, a Syria not ruled by Assad is something that it should look upon favorably, but from my perspective the day after, Assad will be complicated."

On one front, Israel fears that rising chaos and the proliferation of Islamist militants just beyond the Golan Heights fence could lead to cross-border attacks like those from Egypt?s Sinai Peninsula into southern Israel after the fall of former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak. Israeli communities in the Golan Heights have already been put on alert, and local Army commanders said they have formulated a new defense doctrine to cope with the Syrian instability.

Israel also worries about the transfer of advanced weapons and chemical warheads from Syria to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, a development Israeli leaders consider a "red line" because it could give the Iranian ally a major boost in a future war. In late January, Israeli airplanes reportedly bombed a convoy in Syria carrying anti-aircraft missiles to Lebanon ? the first major Israeli attack on Syria since 2007.

Even though Israel never officially claimed responsibility, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said after the attack that Israel is serious about blocking the transfer of sophisticated weapons from Syria to Lebanon.

One Israeli Middle East analyst cautions that Israel risks becoming embroiled in the Syrian fighting, much like Israel became embroiled in the Lebanon civil war, culminating with an invasion in 1982.

"If you draw a red line, you will have to enforce that red line, and that will push you into the conflict," says Guy Bechor, a Middle East historian at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center. "We have been there in Lebanon trapped in between religions and sects. This is not our war."

A 'developing threat'

Back on the ground along the Golan border, Israeli soldiers and civilians can observe and hear the fighting less than a mile away.

A week ago, Israel accepted for the first time a small group of wounded Syrian rebel fighters who requested treatment, raising questions about whether Israel would become a shelter like other Syrian neighbors.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is pushing to complete construction of the Golan border fence, said afterward that as a rule Israel will not allow Syrians to cross into Israeli-controlled territory, but would make exceptions on "humanitarian grounds." ?

Senior Israel Defense Force (IDF) officers in the Northern Command began predicting last year that, amid Assad?s collapse, the Golan might be targeted by militants backed by Iran or global jihadist groups who have flocked to Syria to join the fight against the Assad regime.?The IDF declined to comment on the border situation this week, but Mr. Marom said reservists have been replaced by regular elite forces recently. Two months ago, a senior officer said the IDF had updated its intelligence gathering effort, and adopted a new operational doctrine. ?

"The combination of all of this is to meet the developing threat," said Brig. Gen. Tamir Heiman in a December interview with Channel 2 news. "I don?t know if it will happen, but it?s good to be ready."

In the Alonei Habashan farming cooperative, located just a quarter of a mile from the border, residents are also ready. ?The main gate is closed at night and residents say they are locking their doors for the first time for fear of infiltration. "We will get hit first," says Yiska Dekel, chairwoman of the local board.

Now that the Syrian regime is fighting rebel forces right on the border, the Army considers the border region an eyzor sfar ? a "frontier region" ? with a vacuum of authority, like Egypt?s Sinai Peninsula. In the absence of a central "address" to retaliate against, the question for the Army becomes how to respond to infiltrations or the possibility of rocket strikes from Syria into Israel.

Military officers have spoken of retaliatory incursions. Another defensive solution would be to enforce a no-man?s zone by shooting into a defined area along the Syrian side while staying on the Israeli side of the border ? a tactic used by Israel in the Gaza Strip in recent years.

Israeli analysts believe the best-case scenario for a post-Assad Syria would be a Sunni-dominated government with ties to Turkey and the Gulf. However, that may be a long way off, and in the interim, further chaos is likely. Reserve Colonel Marom predicts that the power vacuum will continue over the next two to three years. If attacks on Israel escalate, Israel may find itself mulling the establishment of a security zone inside Syria ? just as it did in southern Lebanon before withdrawing 2,000. That would entail a limited ground invasion

"I hope the Army has a plan for a security zone," says a security officer at a Golan Heights Israeli community who declined to give his name because he is subject to the Army. "I don?t like it, but if no one gets control over Syria, we?ll have no alternative."

Scientists make older adults less forgetful in memory tests

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Scientists at Baycrest Health Sciences' Rotman Research Institute (RRI) and the University of Toronto's Psychology Department have found compelling evidence that older adults can eliminate forgetfulness and perform as well as younger adults on memory tests.

Scientists used a distraction learning strategy to help older adults overcome age-related forgetting and boost their performance to that of younger adults. Distraction learning sounds like an oxymoron, but a growing body of science is showing that older brains are adept at processing irrelevant and relevant information in the environment, without conscious effort, to aid memory performance.

"Older brains may be be doing something very adaptive with distraction to compensate for weakening memory," said Ren?e Biss, lead investigator and PhD student. "In our study we asked whether distraction can be used to foster memory-boosting rehearsal for older adults. The answer is yes!"

"To eliminate age-related forgetfulness across three consecutive memory experiments and help older adults perform like younger adults is dramatic and to our knowledge a totally unique finding," said Lynn Hasher, senior scientist on the study and a leading authority in attention and inhibitory functioning in younger and older adults. "Poor regulation of attention by older adults may actually have some benefits for memory."

The findings, published online February 21 in Psychological Science, ahead of print publication, have intriguing implications for designing learning strategies for the mature, older student and equipping senior-housing with relevant visual distraction cues throughout the living environment that would serve as rehearsal opportunities to remember things like an upcoming appointment or medications to take, even if the cues aren't consciously paid attention to.

The study

In three experiments, healthy younger adults recruited from the University of Toronto (aged 17- 27) and healthy older adults from the community (aged 60 -- 78) were asked to study and recall a list of words after a short delay and again, on a surprise test, after a 15-minute delay.

During the delay period, half of the studied words occurred again as distraction while people were doing a very simple attention task on pictures. Although repeating words as distracters had no impact on the memory performance of young adults, it boosted older adults' memory for those words by 30% relative to words that had not repeated as distraction.

"Our findings point to exciting possibilities for using strategically-placed relevant distraction as memory aids for older adults -- whether it's in classroom, at home or in a long term care environment," said Biss.

While older adults are watching television or playing a game on a tablet, boosting memory for goals (such as remembering to make a phone call or send a holiday card) could be accomplished by something as simple as running a stream of target information across the bottom of their tablet or TV.
